Reiatsu flooded the town, Nel, and the officer she was with both turned at the same time. “Do you feel that?” He asked.

Nel didn't say anything at first. She focussed on the feeling, the strength, the pressure, and the horrible, consuming evil. “A Hollow,” she said, and a big one, she thought with a frown. “Come on.”

“You're going towards it?” There was a note of panic in the other officer's voice.

“It's outside the walls; I want to make sure it stays there.”

He followed her, reluctantly, and the crushing sensation increased as they approached the town's edge.

It was huge, similar in size and shape to a shield wyrm. It didn't seem to be paying too much attention to the town, yet, but it was only going to be a matter of time. There was no sign of any local wildlife, which was not a surprise given the size of this thing.

“Go to the station,” Nel said, quietly, “and tell the Captain.”

“You think it's going to come here?”

“It's looking for other fiends,” she answered, “and when it doesn't find them, then it'll pay attention to us.” The other officer hesitated for a moment, and Nel turned to look at him, “Go, tell the Captain, then tell everyone else to get over here,” she said. The other officer nodded, and ran.

Nel frowned. Something this big should have attracted the Gotei Division's attentions already. Hopefully, they'd arrive before it came to a fight. She certainly hoped so. It was hard to kill a Hollow, especially one of this size, with ordinary weapons; the Watch here wouldn't be able to handle it.

She cursed when the Hollow turned towards the town. The rest of the Watch arrived behind her and she turned to look at them. For a moment, she scowled. “Where's the Captain?” She was met with silence, and hefted her lance, asking again, “Where is the Captain?”

“I told him there was a giant Fiend on its way to us,” came the answer, worried and apologetic. “He...” The voice trailed off as Nel scowled, and finished, “He's not coming.”

Coward, Nel thought.

“Right!” She called, indicating half the assembled, dreadfully ragtag bunch, “You,” she pointed deliberately at the newer recruits, the younger, the weaker, and the ones with less chance of surviving a fight, “clear the area. Get the people back.” She pointed at another one, “Send an emergency call to the Gotei squads. They might not have noticed it, but we need their asses here.” She turned to look at the Hollow again, “We won't be able to beat it, but we might be able to hold it back until the professionals arrive. Anyone who is too scared to fight, go and join the Captain.” She scowled at the thought, but they had more important things to worry about right now.

“Come on,” she said, leading the others out of the walls. They needed to delay this thing, for as long as possible. If they could do that, then the Shinigami could arrive before this thing hit the town and there were civilian casualties.

The reiatsu felt worse, up close, and the Hollow felt bigger. “Anything Holy based you have,” she told the others, god there were so few of them. She cast her own Holy spell, and watched with satisfaction as it reared, howling in pain. She dodged the retaliatory swipe as best she could, using her lance to defend, and being extremely grateful for the dragoon armour. Someone set to sabotaging it with status effects, and Nel made herself the most aggravating target, getting it to focus its attention on her with stabs and swipes from her lance. Against anything else, she'd be doing considerable damage, she thought, but against this thing.... She was only annoying it.

She attacked it from one side, trying to get it to turn, to follow her, to take its attention away from the town. It swiped at one of the officers, and Nel felt her stomach lurch as they screamed. She focussed for a curaga spell, dodging around the Hollow to administer it.

“Stay on the defensive!” She called to the others, and then jumped, high into the air, coming down to land at the Hollow's head, driving her lance ahead of her.

It screamed, backing up a couple of steps, before it moved to retaliate, swiping at her with claws, and fangs. Nel defended, blocking the worst of it with her lance, feeling and hearing the claws scrape over metal as it made contact with her armour.

She took the advantage, stabbing at the thing again, and evading the subsequent attacks. The other watch members surrounded it, attacking and evading, keeping it occupied, and Nel jumped into the air again, hanging there as she used her chakra to form multiple copies of the lance, and then sent them hurtling down at the Hollow.

That had an effect, piercing the thick skin, and it roared in anger, swiping at the other officers and sending two of them flying across the ground. Nel was already charging another curaga before she landed, helping her colleagues.

“Where are the Shinigami?” She asked, frustration lacing her voice. They wouldn't be able to hold this thing off forever; the others were already hurt, and she wasn't a match for it on her own.

She dodged another vicious swipe, barely, and jumped again, forming more copies of her lance.

“Sorry we took so long,” she heard a voice, male, but ignored it as she launched her attack. The Hollow roared again as her lances struck once more, and then there was a flash, and a noise, and the Hollow crashed to the ground, and became a swirling mass of pyreflies.

Nel landed again, two feet from the man who had spoken earlier. “You took your time,” she said, though without malice, as she removed her helmet.

The man stared at her for a moment, floppy brown hair and large brown eyes framed by black glasses. “We got here as quickly as we could,” he said, after a moment, as she shook her hair out. “Captain Aizen” he said, by way of introduction, “and who are you?”

“Neliel Tu,” she answered, giving him a once over. There was a young girl behind him, with wide eyes and short black hair, wearing an armband. His reiatsu was probably higher than that Hollow's, but it was suppressed, and he wore an expression of mild, affable seriousness.

“Are you in charge here?” He asked.

Nel considered that for a moment, “Since my Captain is hiding under his desk wetting himself, I suppose I am.”

Captain Aizen's expression became momentarily unreadable, and then he said, simply, “I see. Well then, I have to congratulate you all on holding its attention for so long.”

Nel didn't say anything to that, she simply nodded. “Thanks for dealing with it,” she said, and then twitched a smirk at him as she added, “eventually.”

His expression flickered in what might have been a restrained smile, “You're welcome, Miss Tu.”

“Oderschwank,” she told him, turning away slightly to go and look after the injured officers. “Neliel Tu Oderschwank, but I usually go by Nel Tu.”

There was a pause, and she felt him watching her before he said, “You're welcome, Nel Tu.”
